Intercultural Development Inventory
The Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) assesses intercultural competence—the capability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities. The Intercultural Development Inventory is a 50-item questionnaire available online that can be completed in 15–20 minutes.
If you are interested in using the IDI as a tool for your team, please submit the Request Form. The assessment can be administered and debriefed for your team by an IDI-Qualified Administrator affiliated with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Consultation Model
- Administer Assessment: An IDI-Qualified Administrator will arrange for the administration of the IDI to all members of a team/organization.
Cost: $25 per person
- Individual Debrief (up to 60 minutes): An IDI-Qualified Administrator will conduct a confidential individualized session to review the IDI results and initiate a personal development plan for intercultural competence.
Cost: $150 per person
- Group Debrief (1hr): A group debrief includes a group orientation to the IDI, a full debrief of the aggregate assessment outcomes, and a discussion of potential next steps.
Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory
The Intercultural Conflict Style (ICS) Inventory, an 18-item questionnaire, is easy to use, cross-culturally validated assessment of an individual’s approach to communicating, resolving conflicts, and solving problems. The ICS Inventory takes 15 minutes to complete.
By completing the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory, individuals will:
- Increase cultural self-understanding of their own communication and conflict-resolution approach
- Increase cultural other-understanding—of diverse approaches others use to communicate ideas and resolve conflict
- Better manage stress and anxiety that is often present in conflict situations
- Use culturally responsive strategies in communicating your goals and interests to others
- More accurately interpret the statements and actions of the other party

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion offers consults to departments, organizations, and leadership teams to provide support for the R.I.D.E. Action planning process, specific to your team’s needs.
To initiate the consulting process, please complete an interest form. This form will ask for details about your team, action planning process, and engagement with the R.I.D.E. Framework and ODI programs and resources. Also in that interest form, you will schedule a 50-minute meeting. Please choose from the consult options listed below based upon the option that best fits your needs.
- Action Planning Consult: This consult is designed for individuals who have already attended an “Inclusive Excellence for Leaders” workshop. We will address specific departmental needs to work through the action planning process, which can include goal setting, prioritizing DEI, navigating challenging conversations, etc. This will assist teams in the early stages of strategic alignment with the R.I.D.E. Framework.
- Prioritizing DEI Work: This consult addresses strategies to develop transparency and commitment to DEI work for teams in the early stages of the planning process.
- Moving Your Action Plan Forward: You’ve got your targets and action plan, but haven’t had much success in moving your plan forward or following-through on RIDE initiatives. This consult is for leaders who have finished their action plan but seem to find there are barriers to continuing the work. We will review the action plan, address barriers to success, and work on creating a plan that allows your department to move forward with intentional action items.
R.I.D.E. Target Survey
What is the Target Survey?
The Target Survey Consult includes an anonymous survey that will assist your team and department (i.e., academic unit; administrative unit; student organization unit; school or College) in establishing a baseline for R.I.D.E. targets, identifying priorities, and discussing strengths and opportunities for organizational development. Following the completion of the survey, your department-specific R.I.D.E. team will have insight into the priorities of the department and can begin moving forward with the action planning process.
What is involved in the request process for the Target Survey?
- Online requests for a Target Survey consultation are submitted on the ODI webpage by the Department head/Dean or their designee.
- Request needs to be signed off by the Department head/Dean.
- Per departmental request, ODI can add up to 5 additional questions to the survey.
- The department provides a list of email contacts for each member of the department for survey distribution.
What can the department expect?
- ODI colleagues administer the anonymous survey to all members of the department.
- ODI colleagues will produce a summary report of all survey items – quantitative and qualitative.
- Following an anonymity review and approval by members of the departmental RIDE committee (as determined by the R.I.D.E. committee chair and Department head/Dean), survey results are distributed to all members of the department approximately 10 days ahead of the scheduled departmental debrief.
- ODI colleagues will facilitate a group debrief session. This session is not a full overview of the results, but a discussion of paths forward to support R.I.D.E. planning. Department members are expected to have reviewed the summary report to contribute effectively to the debrief session.
- Upon request, ODI can provide a clean and de-identified dataset to the department for further analysis.
What happens with the data that is collected?
The Target Survey data is shared in summary form with the department. In the event that behaviors or practices that violate legal statutes are raised, appropriate referrals will be made (e.g., Human Resources, Legal Department, Title IX, etc.). Note that the Target Survey process is not intended to address individual grievances. If you are interested in using the Target Surveys as a tool for your team, please submit the Request Form.
